Happy Friday and thank you for reading my blog! I would love to know you have been here- please scroll down to the bottom of the home page and put in your email so that I can let you know when sales are happening. Something BIG is coming soon- probably by December- if you love Wise Owl paints and products.
So I always have people ask me about the process for using One Hour Enamel paints. This paint had me from the first time I used it over 4 years ago. I had been using mostly chalk paint or milk paint, even wall paint for my furniture. But the first piece I painted with OHE was a different experience. I remember telling my friends how awesome it was and sending them videos and pictures. If you see the display piece in this blog image- THAT was the first piece I ever painted with OHE. It is in the color "Abyss" and is a beautiful blue. And today is my 4 year anniversary of being a Wise Owl vendor!
Using OHE is different from other paints. Here are the best tips I can give you on how to paint furniture, doors, or cabinets with it.
- PREP the piece well. Clean with a degreaser like Simple Green or Krud Kutter. Then, sand with a sanding block or sander in a 100, 120, 150 grit to enable the paint to adhere well, then clean off the dust.
- PRIME!!! This step is the one that I dread, but I am always glad that I did it. Use Wise Owl primer- it comes in clear, white, grey and dark grey. The color you use will be determined by the color of your paint or what you plan to do with it after painting. If you want to distress OHE you can, but make sure to use clear primer underneath.
- PAINT - you will need at least two coats. With some colors, I usually have to do a light third coat. But it is so worth it. For the first coat, put it on lightly. You will be able to see through it after the first coat, but a light first coat will help with adhesion- you don't want to put too much on because it is prone to drips! It will be dry to the touch in about an hour. Lightly sand when it dries with a fine grit block or paper (I use 400). Then for the second coat, you can apply it heavier- use enough so that it will do its magic and self-level. Still, check for drips.
- THAT'S IT! The beauty of OHE besides the self-levelling, is that it has a built in satin finish topcoat and it is a lovely finish! If you are using the piece in a high traffic area- top of a table or dresser, you will probably want to add a couple coats of extra protection, and Wise Owl finishes come in satin, matte, and semi-gloss.
- The paint is 90% cured in 24 hours and it does take about 30 days to be completely cured, so be sure to protect those surfaces for a month or so. After that, your finish will be rock hard and very durable!
